what does a modeling agency look for in a male model?

I’m here to give you the inside scoop on what it takes to make it in the world of fashion. Whether you’re aiming for a top agency like IMG Models or a boutique agency like Salt Models in Atlanta, Georgia, i’ll help you understand the key requirements and considerations you need to know to succeed.

And here’s a fun fact,

did you know that some of the hottest fashion markets in the world are Atlanta, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York, Miami, and Chicago? That’s right, these cities are fashion hubs, but each modeling agency has its own unique preferences when it comes to signing male models.

So, while one agency in LA might love your look, the agency across the street might be looking for something totally different. It’s all about finding your niche and the agency that’s the perfect match for you!

Facial Features Modeling Agencies Love

If you’re wondering what kind of facial features that catches the eyes of commercial and fashion modeling agencies, generally speaking here are a few things they tend to look for:

  • A defined and chiseled jawline: think angular, sharp, and masculine.
  • Prominent cheekbones: models with strong cheekbones often look more striking in photos and on the runway.
  • Proportional features: a face with features that are in proportion to each other is considered more visually appealing.
  • unique facial attributes like: Thick eyebrows, eye color, fuller lips, straight teeth, hair, freckles, etc.
  • Perfect and Imperfect teeth: Straight teeth or a crooked smile both are accepted in the fashion industry. Many believe that a non-traditional smile will hold them back from working with large brands, but it won’t!
  • A symmetrical face

Here’s the deal also – – what scouts and casting directors are looking for in male models can vary depending on a variety of factors, including the season, the current fashion trends, and the specific needs of the clients they are working with.

What agents are looking for can be super subjective. You might think your face is totally average, just because you see it in the mirror every day. But to an agent, your face could be exactly what they’re looking for to fit their current casting needs.

So don’t be too hard on yourself! Just because you don’t look like the typical male model you see in magazines or on TV doesn’t mean you don’t have what it takes to make it in the industry. In fact, your unique look could be exactly what sets you apart and gets you noticed.

Submit to modeling agencies and then follow up a week or two later by attending open call at the same agencies!

Can I be A Male Model At 5'10?

Of course!  Sure, the fashion industry used to be all about tall guys, but times within the modeling industry are continuously evolving, and there are plenty of opportunities available for male models who under 5’11.

One route you could consider is applying to boutique agencies. These smaller, specialized agencies tend to represent models with unique looks and talent, and many are willing to take a chance on models who don’t meet the traditional height or beauty standards. You never know, you could be exactly what they’re looking for!

Another option is to apply to commercial modeling agencies. Commercial modeling tends to be more flexible when it comes to height requirements, and these agencies typically represent models who are relatable and have an “all-American” look. You could find yourself working on print ads, TV commercials, and other similar projects.

  • Commercial agency: Wilhelmina Denver in Denver, Colorado

It’s important to know that height can be a big factor in the industry, especially if you’re interested in high fashion or editorial work.  In the Big Apple – New York, they’re often looking for male models who tower at 6 feet tall, and even better if you’re up to 6’2″.

However, that’s not to say that there aren’t exceptions – if you’ve got a standout look, talent or personality, you still have a shot at success even if you’re not quite that tall!

That being said, being a male model is about more than just height. It takes a killer combo of unique looks, a strong portfolio, digitals in good lighting, talent, positive attitude, and a professional work ethic.

Also to mention sometimes it’s, ” who you know” that will really help you make it in the fashion industry!

You’ve got to be able to show off clothing designs and capture the attention of clients and audiences. And even if you don’t quite fit the mold of a typical male model, you can still make your mark by adding in selfcare days that will make you look and feel good in order to show confidence in front of casting directors, model scouts, and other clients!

Do you HAVE To Be Tall For Runway Modeling?

Model Eric Anderson – State Management New York

At some point when becoming a male model crosses your mind, you think of runway modeling right? Well, walking the runway isn’t just about looking good, it’s about having poise, confidence, and a height of 5’10 or taller. Sadly, even though the fashion world has evolved, the height restrictions for male runway models still exist.

The typical height requirement of a male runway model: 5’11 – 6’2

But don’t let that stop you if you’re under 5’11, there are still plenty of opportunities for male models to walk the runway. There’s no guarantee that it will be for large brands like Givenchy, Balenciaga, or Diesel who have strict measurements; but being over 6’0 doesn’t JUST guarantee you a spot to walk for top brands either.

It’s really about having a strong agent that can negotiate at their best with clients and directors on your behalf!

Don’t worry if you tried runway and it’s not your lane, there’s other types of modeling gigs that will make allow you to travel the world and make money!

For example:

  1. On Camera – print ads, TV commercials, and other types of advertising – this type of modeling has no ideal height requirements!
  2. Fit modeling – which involves modeling clothes and accessories for activewear and street wear. Also fit modeling involves testing clothes to ensure proper fit and comfort for celebrities with your similar measurements.
– Not all the time can a celebrity make it to a fitting for a red carpet event or a fitting for a movie scene. As a fit model, you’ll book jobs like this for influencers or celebrities who have the same measurements as you!

3. Showroom modeling, fitness modeling, and parts modeling (such as hand or foot modeling) are also options for those looking to break into the modeling industry without meeting the traditional runway height requirements!

Is My Age TOO Old For Male Modeling

Model Michael Justin – LA Models Management

Modeling agencies typically look for guys between the ages of 16 to 35 years old, but there are exceptions depending on the type of modeling and the agency’s needs. For high fashion and editorial modeling, they tend to prefer younger guys with a unique, fresh look.

However, if you’re more of a classic, mature-looking dude, don’t fret – commercial and talent modeling agencies are more up your alley!

Because seriously, there’s a lot of clients like José Banks, Cotonsen, Macy’s who advertise men’s wear for an older crowd!

Although the demand for male models usually declines with age, there’s still hope for you fellas over 35. Commercial and talent modeling involves advertising and promotional work. They often feature models who are older and have a more relatable look.

Plus, the fashion industry is getting more diverse and inclusive, so there’s a chance for guys of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds to get in on the action!

At the end of the day, success in the industry comes down to more than just age and looks – it’s also about your personality, professionalism, but most of all it’s what the CLIENTS and BRANDS prefer, and sometimes they want a mature male model behind the narrative of their latest fashion collection!
