Is It Worth The Read?

The Wilhelmina Guide To Modeling by Natasha Esch was the first book I ever read about getting started in the Fashion Industry.

It helped me tremendously with answering questions that I had about certain topics.

This model Bible will give you insight into:

How to get started and find the right agency, modeling opportunities abroad, how she became a model, red flags to look for, and the different types of modeling an aspiring model can try for.

Is It Worth The Read?

Granted the book was published back in 1996, the book still holds a lot of relevancy to the modeling industry today.

It’s quite obvious that the best learning objectives come from those who have experience.

The book is short and sweet (just under 200 pages) and each chapter is roughly 11 pages or fewer; getting straight to the point.

Like I stated, some advice still holds weight,

but a lot had also changed since Natasha’s era of modeling.

For instance, when Natasha explained A Model’s First Photographs

She speaks about the importance of not wasting money on professional images.

To my knowledge, the modeling industry is heavily populated with models more than ever.

If you want to be seen, you better get the right photos professionally taken!

Not everyone becomes a model the same way.

Some get scouted, some attend open call, and some market their talent through their social platforms.

“The quality of pictures in model portfolios is extremely high. Even basic test shots are the result of carefully planned sessions.” says Natasha

That is true!

“Under no circumstances should you be convinced that getting expensive photos will heighten your chances of being noticed by an agent.” says Natasha

That’s arguable, but it’s true to a certain point.

Photo shoots are inexpensive nowadays.

If paying an affordable amount on a photo shoot means I’ll have a high chance at getting signed, then I’ll do it!

But that’s just me, and I’ve done it, and I’m also currently signed to an awesome model management with more endeavors to come!

Not only that but, my professional images have helped me book modeling jobs when I was an independent model.

But paying for a photo shoot isn’t a MUST HAVE.

“INSTAGRAM SCORED ME A MODELING GIG WITH TYRA BANKS AND CHANGED MY LIFE.”

Then there are models like myself who’ve been told our ‘look’ is common.

Which then subjects us to get professional photos created, to show modeling agencies that our features may appear similar to a model on your board, but our gift in posing, facial expressions and consistent marketing ability on social media sets us apart from each other.

Within ‘The Wilhelmina Guide To Modeling’ book, Natasha emphasizes on the importance of:

• Choosing a reputable modeling agency

• Organizing your portfolio to clients’ liking

• The Day in the Life of a Model

• Wellness and self-care

I could go on and on about the wonderful information in this book.

Natasha’s advice has helped me immensely during my journey and has provided me with the proper knowledge to guide others in getting started with modeling as well.

If you’re interested in becoming a model or you want to advance your modeling career, I’d highly suggest you purchase this book.

It’s also just a really good read in the field of modeling in general.

You won’t find too many books like this one!

You’ll come away with more knowledge than you had before, and you’ll be able to apply it to your journey to becoming a model.

What Others Are Saying About Wilhelmina Guide To Modeling

Reviews

“Have been an editorial/fashion/runway model for 10 years. This is definitely the best book I have read on the subject.

I wish I had been written before I started out because it would have saved me from some of the pitfalls in the business.

Natasha’s writing is short and to the point, -without leaving anything out. It does contain a sample letter you can send to the agencies. It shows you exactly what kind of pictures to send to the agencies, as well. How to dress.

What makeup to wear (or not wear). Everything you need to know. I love her chapter on the foreign markets

(London, Milan, Tokyo etc.) because she describes it exactly the way it is.

Another favorite chapter of mine, you get to know how photographers, stylists, and designers feel about models….and what they expect from us. She walks you through everything from A – Z.

I can’t think of anything she forgot to write about. Best of Luck…..and go for it.”- Gertrud

“Clear basic look into the requirements to be a model. Excellent. Photos and interviews were also extremely insightful. Thank you!” – M.A.
