Are Modeling Schools Worth It? All You Need To Know

Modeling School

You want to become a model, sign with a reputable agency that will keep you working, work with well-known brands, travel the world, and make a living.

Although the thought of posing at photo shoots, walking in fashion shows, networking with photographers, attending an agency meeting, or even open calls is holding you back.

You may not know where to begin.

A modeling school is advertised to help male and female models become confident and enhance their skills and knowledge.

Let’s talk about what these schools offer and whether taking modeling classes will benefit your career.

WHAT IS A MODELING SCHOOL?

Modeling schools are advertised as an organization that will enhance your skills, and education about the fashion industry.

They offer workshops that will give you confidence to act as a model, before you’re place in front of industry professionals who will decide your fate in job bookings.

A modeling school promotes lessons that will train both male and female models on how to:

  • Pose
  • Walk
  • Attending Open Calls and Casting Calls
  • Makeup and Styling
  • Social Media Branding
  • Public Speaking
  • Acting
  • Different types of modeling
  • Industry expectations
  •

Some people get nervous at the thought of public speaking, let alone being in social settings.

To build confidence, the schools teach modeling skills in a group setting.

The group setting is just like summer camp classes.

Working in groups helps students become more confident towards socializing and working around people.

At times you will showcase your talent solo, but often you’ll be with other aspiring models who want to enhance their talent too!

Do I Need To Go To Modeling School?

Quiz yourself whether or not you have the confidence to become a model on your own.

Ask yourself how confident are you to:

  • Attend agency open calls
  • Take digitals with a model scout
  • Interview at a modeling agency
  • Attend casting calls
  • Demonstrate your runway walk in front of casting directors
  • Search for modeling jobs
  • Create candid model-ish content for social media branding
  • Reach out to photographers and directors

If you can check mark at least three things off this list, you can bypass a modeling school.

If you’re hesitant to apply to any modeling engagements, attending a school may work best.

To be nervous about the industry is normal.

A lot of nervousness about being in front of industry professionals comes from the fear of rejection.

Being fearful of rejection originates from being rejected in other life events.

Fear will only hold you back.

I Have Acne

Can I Attend A Modeling School?

Yes, if you have acne you can attend modeling school.

Think of proactive,

remember seeing a guy or girl give their testimony about the product?

They were hired through their talent agency.

While you won’t book MANY jobs with acne, it’s possible to book some jobs that involve clearing skin.

Modeling schools won’t turn you away. They’ll only boost your confidence!

  • braces
  • blemishes
  • height requirement
  • weight requirement
Will not keep you from attending a modeling school.

WHY?

Because modeling schools don’t advertise as a scouting agency.

Your appearance isn’t their main focus.

Modeling schools promise to teach social etiquette and talent development.

Below is a perfect example:

How To Get Accepted To A Modeling School

Modeling schools accept students based on financial matters.

If you or your guardian can pay for classes, you’ll be accepted into any modeling school.

How Much Is Modeling School?

Paying for modeling lessons will be costly.

Modeling lessons cost more than a freelance model developing a portfolio book and traveling to auditions.

– keep that in mind!

Prices vary in different states but only slightly.

A Typical ball park figure of how much a modeling school can cost to attend:

One time tuition fee:

Course length – 4 to 6 month curriculum

Standard Curriculum offers:

  • History of modeling
  • Runway Classes
  • Posing Classes
  • Make-up Classes
  • Website Development
  • Dressing for the industry
  • On-Camera – Commercial acting [ Monologues]
  • Etiquette
  • Public speaking
  • A lifetime of free classes afterwards

Price-Point

Fee: $1599.00 – $2500

Payment plans are offered.

Depending on the scout you’re dealing with, they may lower the price $100 less.

Down-payment amount:

$300 – $595 due before classes

Weekly Payment Plan

  • Bi-weekly (every two weeks) payment plan will be calculated after your down-payment is paid.
  • As long as you pay your bi-weekly payment, you can continue to take lessons at the school.
  • If your payment is passed due, you can’t attend classes until you pay your balance off in full.

Remember when I mentioned you’ll be in groups while attending a modeling school?

Missing a class will require you to take it at a later date with the students who started after you.

Unfortunately, your original class will move on to the next lessons without you.

On the flip side, you’ll meet more people and learn self-development tips from a different group of students.

What You Can Expect In The Package

  • Headshots
  • Portfolio Development
  • IMTA Showcase Entry

What Is IMTA?

IMTA is a scouting event for:

  • Actors
  • Theater – On stage
  • Singers
  • Dancers
  • Models

The event will cost an additional amount on top of the lessons you already paid for.

At IMTA, you will walk in a fashion show in front of model scouts from top agencies from around the United States.

You’ll read a 30-second commercial monologue script in front of the agents, even though you’re there for modeling.

Some modeling jobs involve acting, so practicing a monologue is a good thing to do.

At the end of the event, models will receive ‘callback’ cards from interested scouts.

Additional requirements like a personality video, headshots, and possibly a photo shoot will be required to move on to the next steps of getting signed by an agency.

The team at IMTA will handle the process and prep you for what is expected.

Your modeling school has no association with this process. They only offer the idea of IMTA and tell you the perks of attending the showcase event.

Can I Think It Over?

Scouts are aggressive to make a sale.

Model Scouts from schools are not like bookers at an agency.

For every student that signs up, the model scout gets a commission.

A commission is a percentage of money received for every person they get to purchase or sign-up for a product or service – and that’s on top of their salary.

They’ll call, email, and possible text you to follow up with your sign-up and fees.

You don’t have to make a final decision when you’re contacted by a scout.

The school will always be there.

You can attend at any point of your life

Getting Scouted

Modeling schools have scouts who look for aspiring models at the mall.

They typically are sitting at a table with sign-up information.

No worries if you’re not a mall person, there’s always the option to apply on a modeling schools’ website.

The requirements aren’t strict and the form is fairly easy to fill out.

Online Courses At Modeling Schools

Some modeling schools do offer online courses.

You’ll have to check the FAQs page to see if they do.

A Lady Named Pearl Modeling and Leadership Academy in Atlanta, Georgia

offers online and in-person lessons.

At the price point of modeling schools, it’s best to attend in-person unless you’re making up a missed class or two.

Nothing beats organic social engagements and in-person learning.

Age Requirement

There are no strict age requirements to attend a modeling school and take self-develop lessons.

The typical age of students:

Adults: 18 and Up

Youth: 8 – 17

There are quite a few model managements that accept youth models for child-based products.

On-camera and commercial modeling are best suitable for kids.

Body Measurements

Modeling Schools don’t have measurements that require males or females to be of any particular body measurement.

If you’re going to become a model after modeling school; you’ll have to be in the measurement range that a modeling agency requires.

  • Promotional modeling
  • Commercial Modeling
  • Beauty Modeling
  • Swimwear and Lingerie

These are types of modeling that are flexible with body sizes.

Graduation

After graduation students receive a goodie bag to reward them for completing their classes.

This is what you can expect in a goodie bag:

  • Make-up kits
  • Pamphlets
  • Apparel – Jacket, shirt, or uniform
  • Necklace

Again, this varies based on the school and location you attend.

A perk with paying for modeling classes is that it’s FREE to re-attend the modeling school you graduated from.

The downside,

the class level does not advance. That means you’re going back to school to learn the same basic steps.

After graduation you’ll have better knowledge on:

  • Posing
  • Catwalk
  • Attending Open Calls and Casting Calls
  • Makeup and Styling
  • Social Media Branding
  • Public Speaking
  • Acting
  • Different types of modeling
  • Industry expectations

Scam or Legit

Modeling schools are legit at offering classes to enhance your talent and skills, not at getting you signed to a modeling agency.

If anyone tells you that a modeling school will automatically get you signed to a modeling agency, they’re not being truthful.

They don’t contact model scouts from Wilhelmina, Next Management, The Society, or any other well-known top modeling agency.

Many students and parents have complained about modeling schools for that reason.

Scouts from the schools don’t always make it crystal clear that the student or parent has to find their own representation.

Are Modeling Schools Worth It?

Modeling school will benefit you if you don’t feel confident enough to work in the industry.

You don’t have to attend modeling school if you have self-assurance that you’ll become a working model.

You can become an experienced model by attending open calls and auditions, networking with other models, and booking jobs regularly.

Even as a freelance model, gaining modeling experience is possible.

Just keep your eyes out for red flags and scams.

Honestly, we all could use lessons on enhancing our talent and confidence, but not for the price of a modeling school!

To build your confidence and experience in the modeling industry, you have to get out there and apply yourself.

MODEL MENTORSHIP

A mentor is what you need!

Someone who can easily guide you because they’ve been in the same position as you.

What about modeling are you unsure of?
